Anita Raheja was the first working woman in her family — quietly pioneering, long before it was fashionable to say so. A bridal-makeup specialist, she honed her craft working at Le Méridien in Kuwait, mastering the discipline of international salons and the intimacy of a bride's most important morning.
In 1987 she came home and opened Shadows in Khar West. From day one it was ladies-only and by appointment only — a private, unhurried sanctuary where a woman could exhale, be listened to, and be looked after. Anita has run it personally ever since.
Four decades later, she has made up entire families as brides. She has dressed the same women for their weddings and again for their 25th anniversaries. Today she serves relationships that span three generations — grandmother, mother, granddaughter — often in the same festive week.
Shadows opens at Sai Chhaya Building, 4th Road — ladies-only and appointment-only from the first client.
Word of mouth makes Shadows the bridal name of Khar — whole families come to Anita for their wedding seasons.
The brides of the eighties return with their daughters. Silver anniversaries are dressed by the same hands as the weddings.
Three generations of the same families sit in the same chairs — and Anita still takes a personal interest in every client.
